    Alternator mounting problem

I was going to change out my alternator on my '67 L71, but can't get the old one off. The top nut on the adjustment brcket is no problem, but the bottom bolt and nut assembly when removed do not free up the alternator to remove it. I notice a split-sleeve sticking out about a 1/4 inch from the backside slot of the mounting assembly after the nut and bolt and washer are removed. Does that sleeve go deeper into the mounting slot and into the alternator bottom slot? It seems to, as the alternator will not do anything but rotate on the bottom mount. How do you get that out? Thanks for any help.

    Michael,

I will be willing to bet the problem is there is no flat washer on each side of the split sleeve and it's dug into the alternator case. Try to work the sleeve out of the alternator case. Can you remove the assembly from the car to use a work bench..

I had a similar problem when I put my 696 on. I had to grind a little bit of that piece off, to let the alternator slide in. If I were you I would take a long 3/8 bolt and mushroom the end a little, put it in from the front and drive that little piece back a little. Mine was sticking out about 1/4 of a inch, before I got done mine fell to the floor.
