I have been told that there was an engine knock sensor recall for 1986 Vettes sometime in 1987 or 1988. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find this GM Bulletin? Here is a photo of the OEM sensor and a dealer installed fix. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: 1986 knock sensor recall ?
I have been told that this was a silent recall only for 86-89 owners who complained about high RPM engine miss & knock. Further, the reported fix was susposedly the installation of p/n 16038331 knock module. Of course, I don't know if this is correct. How might I find out for sure? AND, how would one discover the details of a silent recall? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

It sounds like you are referring to a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin). If that is the case is is NOT a recall -- the real name of which is a Campaign. Now all you need to do is find someone with a collection of C4 TSBs. NCRS once did, but that is a "once upon a time" story. I am not sure how far back the Chevrolet Dealer World information goes, but someone connected to a dealership might be able to find it if the Chevrolet SI information goes back that far -- a big IF.Terry- Top

Re: 1986 knock sensor recall ?
I hope I am wrong, and I will publicly apologize if I am. I have been maintaining the TSBs since we were there in Cincinnati, but I believe what I have is what NCRS has. Maybe we all will find out for sure in a couple of months -- Hope, hope.Terry- Top

Re: 1986 knock sensor recall ?
Peter how many knock sensors does your 1986 have? My 85 only has one knock sensor and it is located on the passenger side? My 85 has the cooling system option and part of this system is installed in the block on the drivers side in the block drain access. My 85's knock sensor is located in the block drain on the passenger side.Last edited by Jim T.; March 1, 2010, 07:35 PM.- Top

Re: 1986 knock sensor recall ?
Peter, that wire you are showing in the cylinder head I believe is the cooling fan temp sensor , the knock sensor is mounted in the block, the knock sensor wire color is blue and the cooling fan temp. switch wire should be green (maybe with a with tracer)
The wire splice connector does not look like a gm.style , maybe the wire harness connector is a gm, those connectors were subject to alot of heat from the manifold and if was ever removed it could of broke, they tend to get brittle after a few years.
I was working for a chev. dealer around that time I do not recall any recalls for knock sensors, they were a pretty reliable part.Last edited by Edward J.; March 1, 2010, 04:46 PM.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 1986 knock sensor recall ?
Hi Peter,
I have my copy of "Vette Specs" handy today which has a list of all C4 TSB and campaing notices. I did a quick search and did not see a knock sensor issue but I am sure it is imbedded in a dif heading.
Do you have any other clues to help me track this down?

Re: 1986 knock sensor recall ?
Peter, my auto shop has All Data, did a search also, no campigans, or recalls , nothing noted for knock sensor problems ,or harness replacements.
Are there any problems you maybe experiencing with the car? or is it just the wire that was replaced?New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top
