Do the long cotter pins that hold the pads, get spread on the inside or the outside of the caliper or doesn't it matter?

Re: j56 brakes?
Just curious, would anyone deduct for that? I have a rough time believing that EVERY set of cotter pins were put in the EXACT same way....Chris Enstrom

Re: j56 brakes?
Anyone know, were the calipers assembled on a bench and pads installed and "clipped" in place or pads installed after calipers mounted? At what location, plant/city, were the calipers assembled? At Delco? St. Louis?
While in the brake business I was fortunate to go to Milford and see the '74 Can Am fendered Corvette. It had J-56's when I saw it but don't remember the direction of the pins. We received a couple of calipers from GM to test fit D-8's, pads and single pin backing plates, to assure compliance.- Top

For 1965-67, the calipers were part of the steering knuckle assemblies and the trailing arm assemblies. Just where these were assembled, I do not know. Most likely it was Chevrolet-Warren, but I don't know that, for sure.
For 1968+ the calipers were supplied as a LOADED assembly (i.e. complete with pads and pins) and installed on the steering knuckle and trailing arm assemblies at St. Louis. I expect that the calipers were assembled at Delco-Moraine in Dayton, OH, but I don't know that for sure, either. Delco-Moraine probably supplied the loaded calipers to Chevrolet-Warren or wherever the 65-67 complete assemblies were manufactured, too.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Joe, thanks! 'remembering back a "few" decades on a trip to Dayton Delco in '74-'75 I saw assembled D-8 units and also some suspension mock-ups with calipers and discs. That may be how they left the facility. Too bad I didn't pay more attention at the time.

Re: j56 brakes?
That's correct - Chevrolet-Warren assembled the '65-'67 front knuckle and rear trailing arm assemblies and shipped them to St. Louis.- Top
