    '64 Muncie identification

Hi, my second edition judging guide says that casting numbers and VIN stamps on transmissions are not judged.
However, I wish to verify the originality of my trans.
My '64 Muncie has the following numbers on it:
Stamped with VIN and P422 vertically near rear of main case. Believe the P422 decodes as Muncie 4 speed assembled April 22.
    Main case casting number 3867526
    Metal ID tag 939603
    Tailshaft casting number 3846429

    Thank you for your assistance!

The trans production code decodes as you surmise.

The extension housing is the correct casting number for a 1964. The metal tag on the side cover should read 3839603. I don't know why it would be embossed "939603".

Your main case casting number, if it actually is 3867526, is one that I've never seen or heard of. I would expect casting number 3851325. Among other things, the 3867526 number also does not look like one that would have been around during the 1964 model year.

Sorry, the main case casting number IS 3851325. I wrote down the patent number by mistake a couple of years ago when I made this note!

John, I assume the April assembly date of the trans agrees reasonably with the final assembly of your car. Also, I think your P422 should have another zero in front of the 4, in the format shown in the attached thumbnail, and stamped in the machined corner of the driver side cover.

This trans is off an early Covette, and is PAT. PEND with 3839606 as the case casting #, not far off the number on your tag, (which as Joe says should be 3839603)-- probably the '3' is partly hidden by the cover bolt.

          Thanks Joe and Wayne!

What does the metal tag number mean?

The metal tag is usually embossed with the GM part number of the transmission assembly. This is the number which identifies what the transmission is and what applications it was intended for. This assumes, of course, that "what's inside" is still the same as what was inside when the Muncie, IN factory installed the tag on the transmission.

Primarily the part number tags were to allow the plant to assure the match of the correct speedo gear for the rear end the trans was to be used with, along with close or wide ratio configuraton
