Looking for a 1107320 starter for my 64 327/300 very early car. Engine assembly dated 08/28/63. Or should i be looking for a 1107242 starter due to the car being a very early production 64. Any leads appreciated thanks

Re: 64 Starter
Anthony:
My car is also a very early '64 car (engine build date 8/21/63), and it has starter number 1107320 on it. I believe this may be the original starter since the car is a fairly low-mileage unrestored car and the date on the starter (3J3) is consistent with the car's build date.
The car has never been judged, so I cannot say with certainty that this is correct, but I wanted to pass this information along since our cars appear to have been built within a week of one another.

Re: 64 Starter
Todd, That would be a September built starter on a August built engine. I bet the 63 starter is still used at this point.- Top

Re: 64 Starter
Todd thanks for that bit of info even though your starter is for a later car.Does anybody know when they started to phase out the the 242 for the 320. I would imagine they used up what ever inventory they had before using the 320. Does anybody have an early 64 that was built in the first week or so that they had judged?- Top

Re: 64 Starter
I always thought that all the mechanical components were assembled at the engine plant and shipped as complete assembled engines ready to go. So another words i do not have to find a starter built before my engine assembly date i can get one before my car build date.- Top

That's correct - the engine was "bare-naked" when it left the engine plant; see the photo below. That was taken in 1955 on the Flint V-8 shipping dock, but the state of dress of the engine as-shipped didn't change from then until the mid-70's.

Re: 64 Starter
Todd,
I stand corrected, the starter date is fine for your car. I don't know what I was thinking, guess too many Christmas cookies.- Top
