    Carburator alternative for L-36

Fresh rebuild on my 427/390. My stock #'s Holley carb has been rebuilt twice, (primary meter block issues, base not true/flat, leaks, and more gasket leaks). Have it repaired again and I know that many of these issues are systemic to this 66 Holley #3370, and it is again working well.

I want to take if off, wrap it up for the next Regional judging meet, and put on an alternative, reliable, higher CFM carb for summer driving.
My mechanic is favourable towards Barry Grant Demon Carbs and Edelbrock, and others..........

On my L-36 which brand and series would you recommend or have used with success.

    Keith,
Its a shame you had to do your carb more than once, that should not have been the case as a good reputable re builder would address those issues as a matter of course. Nothing fancy about a 3370.

Now that is finally done, why not just leave it on and enjoy it? If you really feel the need to replace it, I suggest you speak with some of the good, again knowledgeable rebuilders and ask for advice. They may be able to put the perfect carb together for you based on your local fuel available, and your upgrade options. You do not want to start changing things again to find out something does not work properly or fit your choke/fuel line/air cleaner, etc.

Remember that a larger CFM carb probably will be a big disappointment if the rest of your engine mechanics and distributor curves are factory set.

Think of you engine as a whole as a symphony orchestra. Every instrument (component) is tuned to each other to achieve a specific goal. If you change just one instrument, or tune it differently, the end result may not be an improvement!

There is no harm in leaving the original in place, use a stabilizer during storage.

if you take it off the gaskets may dry out and then you will have a problem. also you may have to jury rig the fuel line as only holley sell the type of float bowl you will need

Stick with it, find the problem and correct it. Sometimes the metering block is warped and you can feel it with your thumb. Other surfaces are not that difficult to correct.

I have been told from one rebuilder that he always installs a new metering block and metering plate if 4160 series carburetor.

Here are pics of the new style metering block and a pic of a original that I used JB weld to level. Notice how the new style block is reinforced. What happenes is that the gaskets shrink and gasoline leaks internally and finds a vacuum source.
