Sand blaster pick-up tube

What is the purpose of the double wall for the steel pick-up tubes for the cabinet bead plasters? Also, why do they have the two crimps along the length that almost shut off the ID of these tubes.

Why even have these steel tubes. Won't the rubber hose stick in the media be good enough?

I think its got to have some air flow to the end of the tube, not a lot, but enough to allow the media to flow like a liquid. As a grain of sand or media is picked up, something has to replace it and sand by itself is a solid and doesn't flow freely. Has to have air.

I'll have to look at mine closer...it has a steel pickup tube, but I was unaware that it was double walled.

From time to time, however, I have to use an old trick taught me by machinists at the refinery. When it's humid and the media flow stops or is significantly curtailed, hold the nozzle tightly against your gloved hand and give the air a burst. The air flowing back through the pickup tube fluffs the media allowing it to flow again. I believe that trick is probably a turbo version of the double walled tube.

the center tube is suction and the outer tube allows in air into to move the media. if you push the tubes till the top of the outer one is under the media there will be no pickup. JMHO

I didn't realize that the hose end of the tube needed to stay out of the media to pickup air. I was wondering why the media wasn't consistantly being picked up.

But my other question was, why are there 2 big crimps on this steel tube?

i think it is a cheap and quick way of centering the inter tube in the outer tube. i have not looked at mine lately so i could be wrong on this
