    1966 A/c Blower Motor Capacitor

Does Anyone Have A Picture Or Location Where The Radio Capacitor Originally Mounted On The Blower Motor When A/c Is A Option? Does It Matter What Mounting Screw Is Used? When I Got The Car, It Was Just Laying On Top Of The Evaporator Box.

Dale -- A difficult question, because you'd have to remove the expansion tank to get a good picture. For the same visibility problems, it's doubtful the judges would spend much time figuring out if the attachment points were what they considered typical factory production (TPF).

Let me describe what's on my 1965 (I checked the circuit schematics for 1966 C60 and they appear the same). Draw an imaginary line vertically through the blower motor. On mine, the condenser is attached to the first screw outboard top of that line. This allows the purple wire coming from the 1116992 relay to easily connect to the short black wire leading to the condenser. The ground connector is then attached to the first screw inboard of the vertical line. Then, the black 12v+ output of the condenser connects to the spade connection on the blower assembly flange. This pretty well agrees with the orientation shown in the AIM UPC 60, Sht E3 (in '65) even though that sketch is for non-radio cars.

Thanks Wayne for the quick reply. You are exactly right. After your reply I reviewed some pictures I had taken before restoration and I noticed there was a screw missing in that location. That's why the capacitor was laying on top of the evaporator case.

A part that is missing on my car is the vacumn connector that is on the bottom of the STV. Is this part unique to the Corvette or do other GM cars also use it? Any idea where I might find one?

      Thanks-Dale

        Dale,

What I believe you are missing is the absolute vacuum regulator which attaches to the lower side of the STV valve. I am not aware of any source for this part.

However the shop manual describes the operation of the STV valve both with and without the absolute vacuum regulator so it is not necessary for operation. It is used to minimize the effect of atmospheric pressure ( changes in altitude) on operation of the STV valve according to the shop manual ( 1A-38)

        Randy

Dale --Randy has nailed it. I've heard this appendage also referred to as the "sputnik". This sheet is copied from the 1966 Chevrolet Chassis Overhaul Manual, so it may be unique to Corvette (same stv for '65). On the previous page, there's a table of elevations (ASL) versus vacuum at absolute pressure regulator outlet.

I've never heard of one NOT being installed, but then I don't have much experience in this area. There is a possible issue as to the TFP orientation (clocking) of the sputnik, as the bottom half of the STV can be installed in several positions. Eg. IIRC, the one on my '65 is not as shown in the diagram.

Thanks for taking the time and pictures to help me out Randy and Wayne. I will plug off the vacumn hose that goes to the "sputnik" until I possibly find one. It looks like it was originally held on by some screws.
