My first year with a 65 parked in the cold garage for the winter. Any suggestions on if I need to and how to keep the engine warm? Thanks, Andy

Re: keeping my 65 engine warm this winter
Andy, you don't need to keep the engine warm. I have always changed the oil before winter, give it a good polishing, top off the gas tank and put it on a good battery tender. I also look for the few opportunities when the roads are clear and dry to give it a little exercise. If you can't drive it, better to let it sit than start it periodically as that will build condensation in the motor.- Top

The cold isn't going to hurt anything.
What will hurt the car in an unheated garage are:
1. rodents coming in out of the cold; and,
2. temperature changes that produce condensation on metal surfaces (which will make rust).
After years of struggling with these 2 things, I now put the car in a bag with dessicant.
As stated, fill the gas tank; change the oil; cover the car; and, put an automatic charger on the battery before you put the car to bed for the Winter.- Top

a material that adsorbs moisture. the 53-55 vettes had a desicant bag placed in the rear license plate area so that water wouldn't deposit on the underside of the plexiglass license cover.mike- Top

Re: keeping my 65 engine warm this winter
The drawback to using a "bag with dessicant", is that if there is a small, undetected breach in the seal, the dessicant will quickly become saturated. At this point the bag becomes a seal which traps moisture and prevents air circulation. Not a good combination.- Top

Re: keeping my 65 engine warm this winter
During the last administration President Bush got off of the helicopter at the White House carrying two baby piglets. The Marine standing guard snapped to attention, saluted, and said "Nice pigs, Sir". The President replies "These are not pigs, they are genuine Arkansas Razerback hogs. I got one for Senator Hillary Clinton and one for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi". The Marine again snaps to attention and says "Excellent trade, Sir".- Top
