I've have most of the engine detail done, but the one part I seem to be missing my coil bracket. I "know" I put it somewhere so I wouldn't lose it. I'll continue to search, but in case I need to get another one, I wanted to ask about the interchangability. Small block only? Corvette only? I did find some pictures of the bracket in searching previous posts.

Robert------
There were several different coil brackets used over the years. Most of the 1968-74 used on Corvettes were very similar, if not identical. These were not Corvette-only pieces and were used on other models, too. Some were used for small blocks only and some were used for both big blocks and small blocks.
The bracket used for 1970 small blocks was GM #1966876. This bracket was also used for most 1968-72 small blocks and some big blocks. It was discontinued over 25 years ago and replaced by GM #1970344, a bracket used for some 68-72 big blocks. It's very similar to the 1966876, but it was also discontinued without supercession several years ago.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 71 LT-1 coil bracket
Jeo,
It has been my understanding that the PRODUCTION coil and mounting bracket arrived at St. Louis as an assembly. Are the part numbers you give above for the bracket a part of that assembly, or are they for the SERVICE brackets, or both?Terry- Top

Re: 71 LT-1 coil bracket
Thanks, Joe.
One concern I had was the mounting angle of the coil relative to the vertical. I didn't know if this would be different for a Corvette application to prevent interference with the shielding. But from your information, it looks like this is should not be an issue.- Top

Re: 71 LT-1 coil bracket
Hi Robert,
If you end up buying a reproduction bracket be aware that at least one of the reproductions is formed from thicker metal; there's enough difference that once you know it you can spot it just by looking. It's sort of like the difference in material thickness between original and reproduction air cleaner wing nuts.
I hope you find your original.

Re: 71 LT-1 coil bracket
Terry-----
Yes, most (but not all) coils were supplied to St. Louis as part of an assembly with the bracket. There were exceptions. For example, 1963-67 small block coils were supplied to St. Louis without bracket and 73-74 coils were supplied with bracket as part of the engine assembly.
In any event, I believe the SERVICE part numbers for the brackets were the same as those used for the bracket which was part of the PRODUCTION-utilized coil + bracket assembly. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 71 LT-1 coil bracket
But I thought the assembly supplied coil/bracket included the LT1 -- the subject of this thread. I have never analyzed whether the REPLACEMENT coil bracket is identical to the PRODUCTION part, but I will take your word for it. I know the PRODUCTION coil is different from the SERVICE coil.Terry- Top

It does include the LT-1. The 1970-71 LT-1 coil with bracket assembly was GM #1115272. However, I believe the coil bracket available in SERVICE at that time was the exact same one which was supplied as part of the 1115272 coil and bracket assembly. Regardless of what some parts references might state, I believe that coil bracket was the GM #1966876.
The PRODUCTION coils and SERVICE coils available at the time differed only with respect to the embossments on the coil "can". PRODUCTION coils which included the bracket were embossed with the part number of the assembly. Otherwise, I believe the coil supplied as part of the 1115272 assembly was exactly the same as the coil available in SERVICE as GM #1115207.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
