    1962 Tach Cable Boot Retainer

Does anybody know what this part is? I know what the tach cable boot is. It's the retainer I'm asking about. The retainer is a shiney metal ring with 3 prongs on it.

The AIM illustration shows the boot, but not a separate retainer. However, the illustration could be misleading. If the boot and the retainer were an assembly, that assembly would have a single part number. The illustration might then only show that assembly. The illustrator might only have drawn in the boot and neglected to provide the detail that would show a retainer on the boot. I don't know. I'm speculating here which is why I ask this question.

It gets more confusing. The retainer won't fit in the opening for the tach cable in the firewall. In fact, the Paragon and Corvette Central catalogs mention that that hole may need to be enlarged.

Has anybody ever seen this retainer on a '62? Has anybody ever installed one? (If you answer "yes", expect another question on how.)

i believe, but am not sure, that the original boots had the metal three pronged retainer molded into the rubber. later service replacement boots that i have lack the retainer. a guess.mike

I'm not going to dig it out (part #) but I remember this to also be a CORVAIR part - any air-cooled Chevy clubs in your neighborhood?

Re: 1962 Tach Cable Boot Retainer

Here are a few photos of the original boot in my 62 and a nos boot. The part# for the originals in the AIM is 3799888, no retainer shown as you say. My nos is 3782356, which may be the service replacement as my 53-72 parts book shows. I also see part# 3784992 in my 53-79 parts book. Nowhere does it show a retainer.

I was investigating this a long time ago and got confused too. I see the repros use a retainer, but maybe because their boot requires it and the original did not. The nos boot appears much stiffer than the repro.

          Zip repro pic too.

edit....since you rekindled my curiosity from a long time ago I went archiving and found this post.

https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...=boot&uid=4330Last 2 responses still add to the confusion. It does bring up that the AIM stated to glue the boot into the hole of the dash panel, thus telling me that likely there was no retainer used originally. ?????

In my "travels", I have never come across a tach boot retainer...

Hey Dennis......Coming to Kissimmee this January?

So I just noticed something in the 61-62 JG, pg 65. It says:".... original 62 boot had 5 "ridges" in the bellows, reproductions may show seven "ribs".

Uh-Oh, I count seven in my nos part pictured above. Is this another case of service replacements different from originals? I truly think my boot is not a repro.

Oh the agony of all this!....
