    1963-64 !963 carburator

I had my '63 split window judged and my carb was questioned asbout the date. My carb is a 3461S dated 3AB. When i bought this carb from Chicago Corvette I was told the 3A was Jan. 1963. All the books I read says this is true. The question is about the B following the A, No one seems to know any thing about this. The carb is a Carter AFB mdl 3461S. Does anyone know anything about the letter B following the date code 3A.

    Thank you for your time.

If I remember correctly, the 'extra' alpha designates the revision level of the carb's design/construction which 'can' be used to tie a particular part to a specific time frame in terms of running change/design improvement...

Yes, there is a service bulliten around that gets into the alpha character, I believe specifically to the 3721SA vs 3721SB used in 64 and 65. The Bulletin references the details of the change TSB 1005 or DR 674.

Thanks guys, I would like to see the bulletin as part of the judging manual. That would make arguing with the judge not necessary. Jon

The example was from '64, and the change was from 3720 and 3721 to
3720A and 3721A The TSA is attached

Bill, This does not address my carb, 3461S 3A. I am sure the B following the date code is a revised marking for something similar to what the bulletins are calling out;but it does not address a 1963 3A carb.
            Thanks a lot. Jon

Understood, I was just providing an example of documented Carter practices.

I understand the dilema and hope someone comes forth with an explanation. The Model number for the 63, to the best of my knowledge, never had a revision letter, i.e. 3461S "only". The 3721S's that followed in 64 and 65 did go through a number of revisions "A" and "B" which carried through to the service replacement carbs as late as the 1980's. I bought one, a 3721B in 1983. I also have a 3720A by default (used to replace my stolen 3461S). The only outside physical difference is the throttle linkage for the auto trans, but the jetting and air bleeds are different inside.

The date code is another story. Have you checked with the supplier? Does the "B" look added, or in original characters?
