    1965 interior question

My brother has a early 1965 convertible L-79 with black/white interior combination. The car has white seats and door panels with black dash pads and we are unsure about the correct hardtop headliner color.

I would like to know from original paperwork or original 65 cars if the hard top paperboard headliner is white or black with this interior combination. The headliner we have is black and were not sure the hardtop is original to the car.

This hardtop has a rear window with no date visible, just AS4 and we found the original color is red after removing the rear window. Could this top have been pulled and repainted maroon at the factory? I am not sure this practice was used or if inventory was sufficent.

    Thanks as always, Timothy barbieri

Timothy -- can't offer hard proof, but the hardtop headliner and trim moldings should match the seats (ie. white, in your brother's case). At least this is how the coupes are on white/blue white/red or white/black interiors.

The '65 TIM&JG has a nice table on page 22 of the interior section (ed. 5). For the coupe description it states "the headliner matches the color of the seats".

But after that, it goes on to describe other interior components as "matching interior trim color" for coupe, convertible and convertible w/hardtop models, which IMO, is confusing, given that the interior is of two colors.

Tim, a little more help however not exactly what you need yet. My 64 hard top has the white head liner and trim - do have a white/black interior, but its for MY 64.

        Thanks Wayne and Alan,

I think that judging guide is what's confusing him..

Alan, Is your car original where you can say for sure that's the way it came? This 65 is a late November 1964 build so I would think it's similar to yours.

          Tim,

I restored an original untouched 65 fuelie conv. green body black/white leather interior. Headliner and all trim in the hard top was white. And the headliner was paperboard.

          Hope this helps, Rich.

Ditto Rich. (The then) Hefner Chevrolet on State Street in Fort Wayne, IN, got a new Glen Green '65 in late '64. The car had a black/white interior, green hardtop with white headliner and trim moulding and a white soft top. It was a very sharp looking car.

A friend in town ordered and took delivery of a '65 Nassau Blue with blue/white interior. Headliner was white along with the headliner and trim moulding with a white soft top---another very, very sharp looking Corvette. Tom Bryant knows the car and Larry the guy who owned it then.
