Jim, There are several variations in the 970. Especially the decal. I know more about the C4 PF 25 though. Long time ago the PF970 was covered here. Maybe someone will give you those posts to click on. JD
Not everyone from NCRS comes to this board, even occasionally. You statement would be more accurate if it stated "no one who comes to this board ....."
James, I am quite familiar with the ZR1 oil filter. You see them often on ebay. Probably service replacements though but never the less the correct configuration and color. Decal incorrect.
A repro decal of the PF25 black filter is available I hear but not yours.

I have three PF970C, black, oil filters. All three are different. All are black, but I will attempt to let you know the difference. First of all the original filters on the 1990 ZR-1 were a bit smaller than the subsequent replacement filters. One thing to remember when the filter is held with the screw-in side up, the label is right side up. When placed on the filter housing the label will be upside down. The 1990 filter had no bar code or the word Duraguard on the label. I just judged a 1990 ZR-1 over this past weekend, that had 1,600 miles on it. It had a January build date, and all of the items I described were present. I have a 93 ZR-1 that just received the Dave Hill Award. My filter is an original for 1993. The label is a little bit bigger that the 1990. It also does not have a bar code or Duraguard on the label. All engines built by Mercury Marine from 1993 to 1995 were built in 1993. The last engine built was November 1993. If you have the book, Heart of the Beast, you can see filters on engines prior to delivery to the Corvette Plant. I think Tom Barr, 92-93 Team Leader, has photos of all these filter described. Good luck finding one.
Thanks for the replys. I have a silver label PF970C, as well as a white label with no bar code. The problem is that the 1990 ZR-1s came with a black PF 970 (no C), which were never service parts. There is a photo in the ZR-1 judging manual, but it is B&W and very grainy. Would like to get same photo in color.
Here are two pictures of a LT5 crate motor that I uncrated. The oil filter says Duraguard but doesn't have a bar code. This filter was put on the engine in Stillwater. It would appear that all of the last engines had this filter since this engine was built in Nov. 1993.
