In the midyear era, it was a large horseshoe-shaped piece of cardboard or posterboard stock with a lip that hooked over the rear edge of the hood. Michael Hanson may have a photo of the mask in use on late C3's.

I've wondered about the mask too. Was it just 3 sided so the front edge of the hood received blackout?
These pictures are from my 71, original paint.

PS: In the second picture you can see where the core support foam seal rubbed through the black-out and there's body color quite far into the center of the hood.
Looks virtually identical to my '71, jagged, uneven, sloppy with blackout 'drifting' to the outside edges in the viscinity of the hood hinges where the mask hit against the outside fenders...
