    Problem with 58 taillights

Can't seem to get my taillights working. I have turnsiganls but no running lights. Where does the taillights get it's power? Does it come from the black wire on the light switch? If so does the red wire on the light switch jumper to the black wire inside the switch.

The electrical diagram is in the AIM, section 12, sheet 15. You have a 20 gauge black wire coming off the light switch, going directly thru the connector in the door pillar area to the harness that runs across the rear of the car. You can check it at each connection point and you should have volatge to ground. The liscense plate lamps are on the same circuit. If they are lit you have either a bulb issue or connection issue at the taillamps. Also make sure the Black/white stripe wire is connected at the taillamps, as that is the ground.

I don't have any voltage on the black wire coming from the switch. Does the switch have a set of contacts that ties to the red wire on the switch. Trying to figure out where the black wire gets it's power from. I just purchased this car and the wiring is in a mess. I have reviewed the wiring diagram but not sure how the contact inside the switch operates.

Yes, the red wire is fed from the fuseblock, and the switch distributes the power from the red wire to the individual lights. Do the license lamps light??? Do you have power to ground at the switch on the red wire? (do you have the correct part number switch) The reason I keep asking about the liscense lamps is they are fed from the same wire that the taillamps are fed from. If they are lit, the problem is with the lamp sockets or grounds at the talilamps. If not, the problem is likely upstream, this assumes all grounds have been checked and are functioning. The turn signals can appear to work if the ground is not connected, so start with the license lamps. Do they illuminate when the switch is pulled for the headlamps or parking lamps?

The license lamp wire had been cut so it was not working either. I finally found the problem. The previous owner replaced the light switch and it has eight terminals instead of seven. He had a ground connected to the eight terminal causing a short and blowing the 15 amp fuse. I disconnected it and replaced the fuse and the taillamps are working fine. I also reconnected the tag lamp and they are working also. Thanks a lot for the help.
