    Water Pump Belt

    Hi Gang,
Could use some help with a problem I have trying to order correct Water Pump Belt for my 65 396 without power steering. My old one started to crack and I ordered a new one from LICS which shows 2 different types available, ordered one with no p/s or p/s ? which I did not understand to begin with. My mechanic went and put it on, it's alittle too big and starts to chirp slightly. Call LICS this morning to be told no matter what you order it's the same size belt. Other after Market companys show two belts, others show only one and to top it off I can not find my old one to measure. Can someone please help me with either the correct size or does anyone have the GM part # - I looked in my j/m and no numbers are listed. Would like to send the bird chirp south for the winter. Appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks.

    Ed,

I believe Quanta supplies LICS. Your best bet for an original style belt would be to go straight to Quanta and see what they recommend.

The original GM part number was GM #3837810. This was a special-length belt of 3/8" X 34-13/32". It was discontinued from SERVICE in September, 1974 and replaced by GM #9433722. GM #9433722 remains available from GM for about 20 bucks. Will it work for your application? Well, it will work for many original applications of the 3837810 but I'm not so sure about yours. But, there's only one way to tell, for sure. If you try it, let us know how it works.

I bought one of these (the '722') about 15 years ago, and works OK for me on my 396, although not as tight as original probably was. Made in Canada by Dayco (although bought in US), marked 0.440 x 35.00. No chirping. Slight ovaling at speed, but means the slack is taken up with centrifugal force, and I would not hesitate to depend on it to operate the water pump if (for example) the alternator belt went south without noticing it.

          Guys,
Thanks for your help - given the belt size I think between Quanta and Dr. Rebuild I should have it covered. Will let you know how I make out.
