Need to have my 1966 non-power master cylinder rebuilt

Hi All,

I would like to have my 1966 non-power master cylinder rebuilt. I'm fairly certain that it's an original part and it was on my car when it left the factory. Unfortunately it's leaking and I had to replace it. Can these old master cylinders be overhauled? If so, are there any recommendations on having it rebuilt and who will do a "top flight" job? Thanks for any information provided.

i'd dissassemble it and hone it. if no pitting, install a new seal kit. if pits, send it to Whitepost Restoration in Berryville Va where it will be sleeved . mike

Just talked to "Billy" at Whitepost today, this is what he told me ('66 non-power mc).... $175 for rebuild/resleeve (and they use brass sleeves by the way), $25 if you want the cap replated, $20 return shipping w/insurance yada, yada. I believe he said like 2 day turnaround, he rattled off so much info at once I was loosing track, and it's your mc being rebuilt. You have to specify if you want it painted black because there default color is grey.

I also called White Post today. I talked to Billy and got the same information. I think I'm going to give them a try. I'll report back and let you know how it goes. Thanks for looking into it.

Well, my master cylinder arrived today, back from White Post Restorations in Virginia. It took about one week to get it back from the day that I mailed it. So, for prompt service, White Post gets an "A." As far as the quality of workmanship goes, they get another "A." The master cylinder looks better than new. It was blasted, sleeved, re-painted, and the cap was re-plated. The job also included all new rubber parts and hardware. "Top Flight" work to say the least. Best of all, I did get the exact SAME part back that I sent to them, and not just a rebuilt core from another car. They also give a written lifetime guarantee that my master cylinder will never leak again. How can you beat that?

White Post definitely gets an "A" from me, and they would get my business again if necessary. If you're interested, they have a pretty informative web site that includes a couple good videos about them and their services. Just type in White Post Restorations. You'll find it.

Funny, I also just got back mine yesterday but from Apple Hydraulics. They offer a sleeve only option which is what I went with as I'm a hopeless do-it-yourselfer . I'm pleased with their service also.

Let us know if it works after it's installed. I had White Post restore a 69 Camaro master cylinder and it would not bench bleed or pressure bleed, returned they said nothing was wrong. I tried again no brakes, went and bought a 20.00 master from a local parts store and it worked. Had to locate another dated original master, oh and White Post wouldn't stand behind it.

In the past, White Post has stated that their rebuilt master cylinders should not be pressure bled and that DOT 5 silicone fluid should not be used.

Most of us don't understand this, and why they make that statement as part of their warranty. It shouldn't make any difference.

Did they state this for your rebuild? Just something to consider as you install.

Billy has always been paranoid about DOT5 silicone fluid; have no idea why.

I had White Post restore a 69 Camaro master cylinder and it would not bench bleed or pressure bleed, returned they said nothing was wrong.

I had White Post restore the master cylinder for my '64, and had a similar experience. When bench bleeding, the piston would not return to the back of the bore with fluid in the cylinder. It returned fine with no fluid in it.

I returned it to WP, and received it back several days later with a note that said "Installed stronger spring - checked out OK. Sorry."

It worked fine the second time around, but I was set back about a week and the cost of postage returning it to them.

after reading post about white post , i decided to send
my 1965 p/b master cylinder to Brake and Equipment Warehouse,
455 Harrison St,Minneapolis,Mn 55413 they should receive it
on monday Sept 28
they are going to sleve it with stainless.
