looks like someone took steel wool to the plate to possibly clean off overspray. Maybe that is a good indication since I doubt anyone would paint a replacement and use something rough to remove the paint.

    Just my $0.02.

Harry, you really need to get the Authentication book from the NCRS if you really want to verify the Trim Tag. It is chick full of pictures and knowledge. It is one of the most informative books I have. Regardless, that is exactly what I am looking for - a maroon with black leather interior. Nice car. GOod luck with it.....Regards. ARA

Dutch -- at first blush, I can't point to anything that says "repop". Maybe it was just a switch with another original.
But for the stress marks (discussed in the trim tag book by Grenning/Sinor) angle lighting is best to bring up the relief. Check the '9' and the 'D'.

Here's an example of a tag I rescued from a boneyard (someone had already sawed off the birdcage bar with the VIN tag 194675S101497, which I'd seen on a visit a year earlier). You can see corrosion spots from being exposed to the elements.
