I'm cleaning up the 2 storage compartments and battery compartment on my 70. I know the storage compartments have liners, but how we're the compartments themselves finished at the factory? Also what is the finish on the jack hold down bracket? Tx.

Re: 70 Rear Storage Compartments
Hi Joseph,
Here are some so-so pictures from my 71.
I believe the compartments were just basically unpainted dark gray fiberglass. The battery compartment MAY have had a little black-out sprayed around it's upper perimeter, but I don't think so. You can see in the 2 rear compartment pictures there's no blackout noticeable. The jack compartment looked like the picture shows, the jack and handle had never been out. All that 'stuff' was in the bottom including a nozzle from a spray can. The mustard color is really quite vivid!!!!
The jack mounting brackets were very rusty but I found semigloss black on the under side of the brackets where the rivets had pulled them tight enough to protect the black paint.
I hope this is of some help to you.

Re: 70 Rear Storage Compartments
I am pretty sure my 1970 storage compartments received a black-out operation, and I doubt my car is unique. I looked for pictures, but couldn't find any so far. I am pretty sure the bottom of my jack compartment is black, unlike Alan's -- but for the moment I can't prove it.Terry- Top

Re: 70 Rear Storage Compartments
I'm resurrecting this old thread because I'm performing a mild restoration of the storage compartments in my '69 "driver" quality car. As described in Bizzoco, pg 58, "The storage door frames, the inside storage door faces and the storage compartments were all painted with blackout when the car went through the paint shop." I think this is consistent with Alan's pictures. However, since the battery hold-down hardware had been removed before Alan took the photos I am still searching for an answer to this question:
Was the battery hold-down hardware installed before the body assembly went through the paint shop or after?
The answer to this question will tell me if the rivet heads holding the battery bracket should have paint on them or not. This is detail not covered in the new 68-69 TIM&JG and my search of the forums only found this thread.

Thanx
On my original owner 1969 the battery compartment is fully painted semigloss black. The riveted-in components were apparently painted at the same time and the rivet heads are, thus, painted black. The removable battery clamp and bolt were not painted at this time. The clamp was pre-painted completely and is a somewhat glossier black. The bolt was not painted but is black-phosphate-finished.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
