I'm replacing my underbody reinforcement for the lap belt and I noticed that there is a drain hole slot in this in this reinforcement. There is also, about a half inch hole in the fiberglass just in front of the reinforcement slot.
This got me thinking that is was probably a good idea in putting these drain holes,,,however, there must be a lot of salty road mist coming back in through both of these holes, right into the lap belt retractors.
I bet that this is the major culprit for rusting retractors. I never had any leaks into the interior and yet these retractors are toast. I've been wondering why until last night I noticed these drain holes.
My left side fiberglass hole was covered with debris that was obviously been there for a long time. This is the side that the retractor was in better shape.
No wonder there wasn't a single vendor selling used lap belt retractors at Carlisle- they are probably all rusted out.
