    Chaulk marks discovered

The underbody metal splash shields on my '73 big block coupe were rusty and a little bent, so I decided restoration was in order. When I removed them, I found chaulk markings underneath.

On the passenger side, I found "716". I believe this is the Job #. I looked on my Build Sheet and I see in the upper left it reads "62-0716" - could this relate to the "716"?

On the driver side, I found what appears to be "PW". I think this is where they would write "PB" to indicate power brakes. Could that "W" be a lazy "B" instead?

      Hi Bill,
It's amazing how well that job number has survived on so many cars. The 'shields' really did their 'job'.
Like Rob, I'd think power windows, too. Does your car have them?

Yes, my car has power windows, I thought that too. But this location under the driver side shield should have a "PB" for power brakes according to pictures in both the Dobbins and Licastro fact books.

My 73 has the "PW" marking as well.

There appears to be a chaulk marking above it also, but I have not been able to tell what it is. I have never looked under the passenger side heat shield - something for me to do now.

Yes - that indicates Schedule #62, and it's the 716th consecutive unit within that schedule group.

John, then how does this relate to the oft told story of "500 units and the numbers rolled over to zero"?

                  Great info. Thanks.

I don't know if two cars make a trend, but I guess it's "PW" for power windows. Strange it's in the place where logically you would expect "PB" for power brakes.

                      Terry -

During the C1 and midyear era, each "schedule" consisted of 500 units, and that same format (schedule number - unit number) appeared rubber-stamped on the "Corvette Order". I'm not a C3 guy, but the format William noted (62-0716) makes sense if the logic continued with more units in each schedule, although I don't know that to be a fact.

In the books mentioned, Dobbins & Licastros, the PB is above the shield not behind it. In the books there is no mention of what is behind the shield.

On my 1970 behind the shield is PB & UA9. Sounds like there were changes in 1973.
