Any tricks to get C2 convertible carpet to lay down in back?

    The title says it all.

The carpet is good over the luggage stop thingie, but I'm fighting with the pieces over the rear fenders. I have some bubbles in the valley created by the transition from the horizontal part of the fender to the vertical part.

I have jute underneath the rear floor area, but not on the fender areas. Is that right?

    Thoughts?

Chris - try a carpet steamer, that's what I used when I installed my carpet. I'm sure you can rent them at most places.

Ok, thanks for the thought. Anyone else with other suggestions?

        Hey Chris,
There was a good series of postings early this year from Kirk McKugh (sp?) with his installation of hushmat and carpet. You might want to check them out. Here's the link to one of them where he talks about using a heat gun in the rear cargo area.

Also do some searching on this and you'll find his whole series of posts. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

        Cheers
        Mike

          Chris:

I always fill some large storage baggies with sand and use those. I'll stack additional weight on and around these. I will also use anything that has some weight and will fit the contours.

I used a Jiffy clothing steamer and it made all the difference. The pieces on the wheel arches were a horrible fit out of the box. But applying steam to the back (latex) side allowed me to stretch/shrink enough to get a tight fit. As the carpet dries out, it gets even tighter.

The underlayment set I bought did not cover the rear wheel arches. I believe this is correct however. But since the carpet pieces for these areas were BIG, I went ahead and covered the arches in jute.

Besides the steam, the other secret weapon was 3M's Super 90 spray adhesive -- what a great product. No need to go crazy with it. Concentrate on gluing the corners in tight. The flat sections don't need it. Used 6 cans to do the convertible, front and back.

If you can rent a Jiffy steamer, it's well worth it. I bought a used one for $100, and whaddya know -it does a great job on clothes too!
