    1976 Gas tank

    Does anyone know where I can get a replacement gas tank for a 1976 with a bladder? Most repo shops sell without the bladder, or can I use a replacement tank without a bladder?

      ...the '75-'77 used the exact same tank and as far as I know, no bladders are available but probably are through Corvette wrecking yards. Due to aging, chemical exposure to the gasoline over the decades, etc., these bladders are collapsing and shrinking. Some seem to be affected more than others-kinda like the urethane bumpers. Some people get 30yrs out of them, some are only getting 20yrs before they disintegrate.

      ...I removed my '75 Corvette's bladder in '94 when it got distorted enough to where the car would only hold 12 gals of gas. Finally had enough one day when I was on the expressway going to a cruise-in a few hours away and the "distorted" sidewall of the bladder held the float of the fuel guage in the "up" of "half-full" and I literally ran the tank bone dry!!! I wrote an article several years ago and it's in the one of the Restorer Magazines on how to do it. Actually, only about a good 4 hour job to do. Very straight forward. Mine's been superb since '94. Is there a safety issue? I guess, but '53-'74 Corvettes didn't have them, so all of those have to come off the road before my '75 does.

        Paul;
        Are you saying that you replaced your tank without a replacement bladder? I know Quanta sells replacement tanks but this tanks seems ok, I am however concerned with putting the old bladder back in. Thanks

          If I recall correctly, you need to cut off and save the neck part of the bladder because it forms the seal at the filler neck. If you have a deteriorated bladder and there are no replacements, you have no recourse but to run without a bladder (same as 1968s through 1974s) as Paul mentions.

          Also, from a safety standpoint, it is also very important to carry a fully inflated spare tire in the tub under the car. The tire forms an energy management barrier in the case of a severe hit in the rear end.
