Advice for a really stiff clutch on a 60

In reference to this earlier posting, I now have more questions. https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...70338&uid=8760

Well I finally have the car and for the most part I am quite happy with it. The first order of business though is dealing with that clutch.

It is WAY too stiff and I would say pretty much undrivable the way it is. If you use normal foot/leg movement for depressing the clutch it is VERY stiff and the pedal throw seems quite short. When you release it is practicaly impossible to not stall it every time as it is so stiff and engages quite quickly.

I found that if I "plant" my heal on the floor and just pivot my ankle that I can better control the engagement and release of it to the point that it is somewhat driveable but I know this isn't right.

Apparently the pressure plate(which I confirmed is a diaphagm type), bellhousing, flywheel and cross shaft are from a 66 small block vette. Is there anyway to make this combination work in a 60? I'm thinking that it's a leverage or geometry conflict between the mix of parts but I'm currious to see what other have done in this situation because I'll bet this isn't the only 60 out there with a C2 clutch and bellhousing.

I was thinking that if I extended the input arm on the cross shaft a bit that it would get me more leverage and thus more throw at the pedal and that might do it but before I go and "Bubba-ize it" more I wanted to see if others have been here and what they did to fix it.

I am actually looking for some correct components to return this part of the car back to original but in the mean time I'd like to get the set-up that's in there working so that I can at least drive the car.

    Any ideas?

Oh and could someone post a side by side pic of a 60 style and 66 style cross shaft? I'd like to see what the difference is between the lever lengths and clock positions of each. maybe a 60 cross shaft is all it needs(fingers crossed)?

The '60 has an adjustable clutch pedal. Here is the fast (stiff) position. Rotate the bracket about the lower bolt so the upper bolt is in the visible open hole and it will be in the slow (softer) position.

I roughly measured my installed '65 cross shaft at 5" in, 4" out: 1.25 ratio.
I measured my '59 cross shaft at 3.75" in, 2.5" out: 1.5 ratio

Thanks Bill, I'm pretty green when it comes to these C1s and never knew of that adjustment. I see what you are talking about and mine is set to that fast setting too. I'll move the adjustment and it should be good enough until I get the proper components down the road.

        Greg,

I have been following your search for a C-1 on this discussion board and glad you found one. Could you post some pictures of your new find and a little about the '60?

        Thanks,

        Terry

          Hi Terry,

Well it's nice to finally have one that's for sure! It's far from a trailer queen but it has potential and is about a 10 foot driver the way it is. The paint is about 20 years old but still looks okay and the front clip was replaced at least that long ago with another original corvette clip.

The interior has new Al Knoch carpet, seat covers, carpet and door panels but I have to put the door panels on. Don't know about the dash pad but it looks new too. It has a wonder bar radio but I doubt if it works.

Mechanically it has a rebuilt 67 283 2brl PG block(3896944) and rebuilt T-10 from a 62...I think. The main case has what looks like a date code cast in of B 8 62 and the tail shaft has 1 8 62. Are these the date codes? Brakes and suspension is all done.

The car runs great but it has a few wiring issues under the dash that I'll have to take care of. I changed the bracket around on the clutch pedal and it's alot better but it still seems funny...sort of "notchy" in one spot and there is alot of free play. It's still not right but it should be drivable at least until I can get the correct parts back in there.

Enjoy the pics but please excuse the dirt.

Greg congratulations on your new toy !! You have something different to look at in your shed now. In the first photo I noticed at the bottom of the headlight there is a crack. Is it the photo or am i correct. They are always cracking around that join. I have a small one as well on both sides. Stewy

              Greg,

Your '60 looks like a great catch. I know you did your research to find it. Where did you end up getting it? I'm sorry to get this thread off the subject but I hadn't heard how the final outcome of your search came out. Congrats!
