Re: wiper arms on an early 66
It's addressed in your copy of the 1966 Judging Guide book. But, there's no guidance as to the effective change over between 'early' and 'late'.
This is the case with more than one running change where we have no good information regarding what level of inventory was on-hand in the factory of the early part and how long it took for those early parts to work their way out of the system.
Sometimes, this could be a rather lengthy process with mixed-mode production leaving the assy line and 'straggler' examples of the early part showing up quite some time after the effective change.- Top

Re: wiper arms on an early 66
Bill - I agree with Jack that they used up production pieces (why throw them away) and for sure the rod (the piece that the clip on the wiper blade assembly attaches to) on early 66 wiper arms was polished; but we need more documented examples from original cars (hard to confirm after 40 plus years) which polished wiper arms like used in 1963 thru 1965 were used on early 66s to provide guidance in the 1966 TIM&JG. Re: wiper arms on an early 66
It depends on how 'early/late' the car is, who you pull for exterior judging and perhaps how other/similar cars on the judging field that day are configured. Most senior judges understand the situation (no specific date known) and give the benefit of the doubt to the owner.
Your question deals with artform (what a specfic judge knows or 'thinks' he/she knows), so it's not possible to give you a definite answer. But, the odds are on your side since it's a grey area...- Top

Re: wiper arms on an early 66
I have a similar issue. I have an early 67 (100183) and I have 66 wiper blades on the car. My family has owned the car since 1973. Do I replace those with 67 wiper blades, or do I leave it and try and explain it?Chris Enstrom

Re: wiper arms on an early 66
I have a November 65 built 66 and the arms are as described by Peter Lindahl. The stamped part of the arm is dull (brushed) but the rod portion is polished.- Top

Re: wiper blade on an early 67
Chris - I kind of overlooked your post earlier because I was focused on 66 wiper arms but in rereading the thread you got my attention. I have a September built 67, S/N 1476. So, what windshield wiper blades do you have on your early 1967? TRICOs or ANCOs? And what is the configuration of the wiper blade holders on your car. Why do you think that the wiper blades on your 1967 are 1966 wiper blades? Pete- Top

Hi Pete,
Just want to say thank you for the great job in helping me with an original lock cylinder for my ignition and keys for my doors. You are the man to go to for this kind of work.
I have a 66 late April 7th 1966 driver side (original arm) is satin as you can see. Rod is satin also. The passenenger side is really funky. Replaced by restorer ( or stolen by him ) 30 years ago.
Ps
notice the orginial beach boys cassette on dash....... still playing 35 years later

Re: wiper arms on an early 66
Tom - The reduction of glare from items in the driver's line-of-sight is the reason we hear or give for the chance in the finish of the windshield wiper (w/s/w) arms and blade holders from the bright polished to the brushed with the 1966 production year. It doesn't appear to have been some kind of mandate because we know that the rods on the early 1966 Corvette w/s/w arms for sure were still polished for some time while the main body and base pieces (typically) had the brushed finish. Also, changes mandated by DOT requirements didn't become effective until the later 60s or early 70s.
As far as bright polished w/s/w arms being on an early (we've already commented on how early is "early") 1966 Corvette from the factory, could it have happened, I'd have to say "yes" because we have found over the years that things we thought "couldn't have happen" in production "did" and as a judge I'm always interested and willing to have the owner present his case, but without some "real" (compelling) objective evidence, I probably would have to lean in the direction of the bright polished w/s/w arms being on an early 1966 Corvette not being typical factory production. But having said that I also know we don't know everything about the production of these cars (although there are some who think they do, but they are much younger than me) if I have done my research and believe the the parts is "correct" or original to my car, I will not change it to conform to the TIM&JG because although the TIM&JG is an excellent resource, it is clearly stated that the TIM&JG is guidance.
Too many interesting things have happened to cars at the factory, on delivery to Dealer, or at the Dealer. Particularly at the Dealer where wheel were changed because someone liked red-line tires better than the white walls or black walls. Also, if a Service repair had to be done prior to Customer delivery, or when a piece or part was damaged in delivery or in Dealer prep (Dealer prep? What is that?) and guess what the part the Dealers Parts Department (fortunately) had in stock for the repair was from a previous model that would fit. I'm sure I know the answer to what was done.
