C2 ignition shield plug wire help

    Gents,

Spent most of the day putting new plugs and wires on my 66 small block with AC. Having an issue with the #2 and #4 wires. I used the tip in the archives of tapping the new wire (minus dist boot) to the old wire (minus plug boot) and pulling thru the ign shields on #1 and # 3 with no issues. I saved #2 and 4 till last because I knew they would be trouble under the compressor. I got # 2 thru the shield but #4 just wont go thru. Must be tight in there because the wires separate at the tape. Any other tips/tricks?

Removing or loosening the shield will be difficult because it looks like the front mounting is incorrect. The shield is mounted at the front between the block and engine mount so removing the front bolt is not going to loosen the shield. I am assuming the shield should have been bolted to the engine mount according to U69 A7.

I really would like to get that #4 wire thru the shield without removing it. Any ideas.

If you can't get it through with the boot off I would think the next step would be to loosen up the motor mount and jack up the engine slightly to add a little space for the wires.

I would remove the boomerang, re-terminate the plug wires as a bench work task, route them properly from the looms & through the 'U' clip on the oil pan just at the apex of the sheild, then re-install the boomerang. The starter assembly will have to be removed to provide access, and the aft (#6 & 8) heat shield will fall away with the boomerang. This may same labor intensive; however, I can't see how the method you describe in your post would work in such tight quarters. You'll have to do all work from below. Attached is a picture of my '66 in that stage. I'm unfamiliar with what difficulties are presented by a non-original motor mount.

        Jeff -

The 1 & 3 and the 2 & 4 wires on each side should be routed between the back of the engine mount and the block to avoid kinking them (which is death to LL wires); photo below shows the factory wire routing.

Great pics. I am also interested in the routing. Any more close up thumb nails would be great!

Mine is 70 L46 with safety mounts. Other than that they are pretty much the same. I had no idea before that pic, on how the wires do through the mount and the shield attaches. The AIM is not that clear.

          Thanks,

          Bill

Thanks for the pictures Jeff and John. They were a great help as the AC compressor was obstructing my view even with a mirror. I was finally able to get #2 and #4 routed down the motor mount. I used a leader of nylon grass trimmer line tapped to my delco wire and working from both above and below was able to get it routed thru the shields
