I recently purchased a complete new exhaust system for my 69 along with new manifolds. Since the car had headers on it when I got it, I really didn't have an original system to look at when I took it out. My new exhaust pipes come with two short extentions where the pipe meets the manifold. I see where they go but my question is why? Why not just make the pipe a little longer? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 69 exhaust
Jim, I'm not sure what you mean by extensions?
There are two small pipes that go inside the flanged end of the head pipes where they attach to the manifolds, but they are not extentions, more like alignment sleeves.
Is this what you are refering to?- Top

The extensions don't actually serve to "extend" the length of the forward pipe. Their purpose is to align the forward pipes with the manifold, center and align the packing, and help shield the packing from direct contact with exhaust gasses. Some forward pipes have the extensions as integral with the forward pipes, but GM originals did not.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 69 exhaust
Hello
Not that it matters to you because you already have your system but just in case others are interested. I just got a complete system for my 69 SB from Gardner Exhaust and I couldnt be happier. Everything fit PERFECTLY and looks great with proper bends and wrinkles. The set up cost a few bucks more but worth every cent.- Top
