    clutch engagement on 1963

    just replaced my 63's clutch with a Luk clutch set. Seems to be working fine but engagement is much closer to floor now. Sure it is how I have adjusted things up but not sure which adjustment will impact where it engages. Actually tried to leave rods at same lenght as they came out.

    Is it the clutch pedal rod adjustment? Which direction?

    Thanks for the help.

    Same thing happened to me on my 65. i replaced the flywheel as well because i did not want to wait for it to be cut. i had to adjust the rod by the brake cylinder all the way forward. I do not like the look but it works. next time i will be more patient.

      Rich;

      You should be able to adjust the threaded rod. Back off both nuts and then move the lever forward (as I recall without looking) until it begins to disengage the clutch... hold this position and return and tighten the nuts.. This should do the trick... I replaced my '63 clutch and did the same thing... from that point, minor adjustments can be made to your liking.

      Have fun!

        When you are done make sure you have some free play in the pedal, before driving. Dale

          Adjust the swivel where the pedal pushrod connects to the upper arm on the cross shaft so you have 1" to 1-1/4" of pedal free play between the full up position (against the rubber bumper) and the point where you feel resistance when depressing the pedal (which is when the throwout bearing contacts the clutch fingers). Make sure the return spring is in place, and the cross shaft pivots freely at both ends.

          That's the only adjustment in the linkage system - don't worry about the engagement point relative to the floor; the linkage will take care of that. Inadequate pedal free play will result in frying your new throwout bearing.

            Thanks everyone. Adjusted the rod a little last night (a little does a lot!). Made sure I had some "free play" before the clutch engaged. I am much happier with the clutch pedal now.

            Thanks for the help.

              I think you may misunderstand free play. You need to look in your shop manual. It is the lightly sprung portion at the top of the travel that represents some slack in the system prior to the throwout bearing contacting the clutch plate fingers.

              You adjust the clutch to get about an inch of free play, and live with the engagement point that results. Inadequate free play will result in premature clutch wear.

              New clutches always release close to the floor, old clutches release near the top.
