Replace '64-6 Turn Signal Switch but keep old wires

My late '65 has always had a sloppy action with this switch (have to hold lever down when making LH turn or it stops flashing). Bought an NOS #910821 and want to do the swap while my steering column is out. Same switch is used for '64-6 non-tele columns. But I'd also like to keep the original wires, in good condition, as the colors of the service unit are hideous and scream "replacement".

This will require unplugging the connector, which looks easy (you can see the tab that you can bend to release the right side of the plug [it's broken off in the original, which might explain the poor electrical contact -- the plug wobbles -- in fact you can see it sitting at an angle].

Has anybody successfully done this wire harness swap ? The tab bends out of the way on the new unit, but I still can't seem to free the plug from the left side. Would hate to break off this tab and ruin the new switch.

    Wayne,

Yes, it can be done. I just removed a plug from an old switch. It's difficult and it's not just a plug. It's the switching mechanism itself.
Probably the root of your problems to begin with. When you remove the wiring plug you will find the silver studs and switch leafs. You should remove them from the new switch plug and transfer them to the old plug.

    Be careful and good luck.
