    1971 LT-1 Hood Stripe Orientation

    Hi all,

My restorer is ready to paint the LT-1 pinstripe on my '71 LT-1. I have supplied a stencil kit, but there is a question of proper orientation on the hood.

I/we have a copy of the AIM, but I don't think it specifies the exact location on the hood.

Is there a member with an original LT-1 hood that would take some measurements for me?

What he's looking for is the distance from the cowl edge of the hood to each stencil point, and the distance between these points. He also would like the distance from the nose point to one side or other of the hood to properly align the stencil.

    Thanks in advance

    Robert

    Robert,
I've got and original paint/hood stripe 71 so these measurements should be right. All dimensions are to the edge of the hood itself.
Passenger side stripe point is 3 7/8" and Drivers side is 4" to the cowl edge of the hood. Distance between points is 25 3/4".
Drivers side edge to front center point is 18 13/16" and Passenger side is 18 11/16".
    Hope that helps.

      Dave,

Thanks very much for this information. My painter will be relieved.

The mask the factory used was placed on the hood by hand. They will all be a little different, and we have fun at meets with original paint cars comparing the small differences. Just proves we are a little off level when we enjoy ourselves so much with such weird pursuits.

I have an early (1324) 1971 which has the 1970 hood stripe (wider inter stripe in front) and the LT-1 decal is in silver not white. This is contrary to the judging manuel but it is origional and is what it is. Any comments? Thanks Ed

            Terry,

I saved this picture previously posted by Alan Struck. This photo shows how the stencil was placed and paint applied. I figured that since it was hand applied, there would be some variance from car to car.

That whole story, from "Corvette News" in late 1971 IIRC, had some very interesting photos. It is worth digging out the whole story, if you have a CN collection. Some of the captions, talking about the improved quality of the 1971 body material, are a hoot from this perspective.
