Edwards,
I'm not sure if it carried thru '72, but some of the shielding is stainless and not plated and some was steel that was cheaply chromed, e.g., flash chromed.
One mistake some people make is to have the shielding show chromed. It was never that nice. There are platers who know how to do the correct plating. You need to call around to find one.

Ed the heat shields are clear zinc plated. You can simulate this with a cad/zinc paint sprayed on very light just enough to give color. If you put down too much paint it will look painted and judges will deduct points.- Top

Re: Ing. Sheild Plating 72 Sm Blk.
Ed,
I am getting my exhaust tips re-plated right now. I should get them back next week and can't wait to see how they come out. I always heard people say the tips were flash chrome, but didn't know exactly how to verify.
Finding a plater that even knew the details of flash chrome was difficult. I wasted a large amount of time on this endeavor. The place I found, here in S.E. Michigan does plating for Ford, and one of their processes is flash chrome.
They told me that flash chrome contains no nickel. Below is a cut & paste from their web site.
Chrome Flash is a thin layer of chrome to prevent the stainless substrate from oxidizing and yellowing over time. Nickel-chrome provides 3 layers of Nickel, 1 for adhesion, 1 for luster/shine, and 1 for corrosion protection. Nickel will appear much more reflective than Chrome Flash.
As a side note, the tip I sent to the plater as a control piece (original OEM tip) had some nickel in it, so they said that technically it was not flash chrome. It is not triple chrome, and it is not polished either. Either of these would be a detriment for judging as they would be too reflective in appearance.- Top
