    1971 Rear end noise

I am having a lot of noise from my 1971 454/4 speed 85K mile rear end and I took in into the dealer to have it checked out. The diagnosis was worn bearings and they were going to get an entire rebuilt rear end . Of course, I said no since the one in the car is the original. They said they could not rebuild it because there is a "special tool" needed to rebuild it. They said it was $500/600. These guys are pretty good old boys and they have worked on my 1900 ZR-1 and do good work. As anyone ever heard of this tool. Thanks! Jim

You should find it detailed in your copy of the Chassis Service Manual/Chassis Overhaul Manual. It spreads the case to allow R&R of the gear/posi assy.

Around our chapter several members have built their own 'equivalent' special tools and they get passed around on an as required basis.

You can either search for another local rebuilder who has a tool and will do the job locally for you, or you can pull (have pulled) the differential and send it out to those advertizing turn key overhaul services (check the 'services' section of Driveline).

You can also look in driveline for Bair's who business line is rebuilding rear ends and trailing arms. You can send it to them for a full rebuild...Don

The dealer guy doesn't know what he's doing. There are also many ways to rebuild these internally to make them stronger. I do a lot of them and the "special" tools I use are a lathe, surface grinder,Bridgeport and skilled procedures.
This link will help you through the whole deal, what's involved and how they can be upgraded. Most rebuilders do not follow these procedures due to cost or lack of experience, but if you do you'll eliminate the common weak points in the diff. If you have questions let me know, I just built a nice custom diff for a 71 BB last month. Good luck
