    Fuel Tank Question

For a 69 427/400 should the fuel tank have the round indents at each end top and bottom or should it have rectangular indents. I took out one with rectangular indents, which was not original to the car, but the one I got from Quanta has round indents. I was told it is correct.

It depends when the car was built. If it was built prior to ABOUT August, 1969 it should have the "round" indentations. If it was built after ABOUT August, 1969, it should have the "rectangular" indentations. Also, the later tanks have an integral pressure-vacuum valve; earlier tanks did not.

Joe, My cars build date is July 7 1969 so it is the correct tank then. I ordered it through Bairs and he knows the build date of my car. As far as the finish goes....I dont think Ill be getting my car judged and I hate to have the tank get surface rust on it right away. It comes coated with an oily rust preventive coating of some kind on it. Any suggestions as to what I can put on it without losing its original look too much.

      Thanks, Ned

Given the build date, I'd say the tank configuration could go either way. The only way to know, for sure, would be to have the known-original tank that was originally installed in the car. However, based on what you previously described, I'd say it's likely the tank you took out of the car was the original tank. Since it had the round indentions, that was likely how yours was originally built. I would not worry about it, though. As I say, given the date it could go either way.

The tanks are terne-coated steel. They will not easily rust.
