    Astro Vent Question

Inside the car there are two 2"x10" ventilation doors behind the seats that are controlled by vacuum. I have three questions.

    1. What color should be painted. Should they be semi-gloss black. Also do they have over spray from the body color?

    2. On the back side when the doors are removed was there a insect screen on the back? There are rubber tabs on the back side that appear to have held something in place.

    3. What makes these doors operate? What control on the console makes open and close?

    Thanks for your help Joe

    Joe,

I can answer question 3. The left thumbwheel has positions on the lens that say Air DeFog DeIce , you should hear the vacuum pods opening and closing the different vents depending on the position the thumbwheel is rolled to.

I believe the Air position will open the rear vents, this only works for non a/c optioned cars.

        Joe,
On my early 69', non-air car I think the color was a semi-gloss black, I do not remember seeing overspray. I rebuilt mine last year, as the foam seals were falling apart. Under the doors are a thin flapper made of foam that should only let pressure out, not in. The doors are controlled by vacuum from the heater control panel. When the dial is moved from c to h vacuum is applied to the dampers. I also had to repair the metal vacuum line that runs through the console and behind the pass seat, as it is common for them to rust out.

        Hope this helps.

        Joe

The temp control wheel also has to be at the full cold position for the vent doors to open.

            Hi Joe,
My 71 agrees with Joe H.'s findings. Semi-gloss paint and no body color over spray.
I did notice that the rods and various plastic 'hinge' parts didn't have paint on them so it seemed as though the flapper doors had been painted before the mechanism was put together.
            Regards,
            Alan

              Thanks All Great info!

              Joe

I am intrigued by the foam flapper that you mentioned. I purchased a kit to replace the seals. But I didn't find a flap. I have two 1/4 inch thick pads that fit on the doors, the 1/16 inch seals that go around the perimeter of the units and 1/16 seals that are about the size of the door openings. I thought that they were just the cut sections of the outer perimeter seals. If they are the flaps how are they attached?

              Thanks Joe k

The rubber flaps are thin foam rubber and should have holes in them. The rubber tabs you mentioned are what hold them on from the backside. See the DR Rebuild site http://www.docrebuild.com/dr-r-web/AAA-HOME.HTML.

This is where I purchased the rebuild kit. I think there are good pics there also to show you how it goes together.

I have a question related to the operation of these vent/doors: How do they work on the 69 A/C (C-60) cars? Are they functional? I could never tell if they were opening or not. Thanks and regards...joe

                      Re: Astro Vent Question

Joe 46448 the air conditioned Corvettes do not have a vacuum operated rear vent system that opens and closes. Air conditioned Corvettes have a permanent plate that closes off the rear vents to prevent any air flow out the rear vent grilles from inside the car.
