battery question
Why is it always recommended that when jump starting a car, more often than not, you are told to attach the ground (assume a negative ground system) from the booster battery to the frame of the car being started and not directly to negative post?

The last connection that is made generally causes a spark. The battery produces hydrogen gas.

If you've ever experienced a car battery blowing up on you, you'll never forget it. Thing goes off like a bomb. Very loud. The force of the explosion will split the skin on the hand that's holding the battery cable. Of course, the acid in your eyes is the biggest danger. Wear safety glasses.
If no one gets hurt, it's funny to see your clothing disintegrate after a little while. Probably not so humorous if you're in the emergency room.
Happened to me twice. First time was the other guy's fault. I should have known better before the second time. But, as what always precedes accidents, something else was more important, and I was pressed for time.
