    79 Harmonic Balancer

I finally got around to working on the 79. I need a harmonic balancer, since the original came off is two pieces. Yeah it was shot. Anybody know what the correct GM part number for this thing is. Engine is a base motor automatic.

It was originally GM #6272221, later GM #10066045, and currently GM #12551537. The latter is about 160 bucks, GM list.

These are also available in the aftermarket. Balkamp (NAPA) #6005214 or Dorman #594012. Either of these sell for about 50 bucks. Are they the same as the GM piece? They APPEAR the same but that does not mean they ARE the same.

      Thanks Joe.

Here is what I took off. I could fix this with some glue and duct tape.

GM #3947701 was a predecessor part number to the GM #6272221. It was used for many base 350 CID engines from 1969 through 1971. However, it was never originally used on any Corvette since 69-71 Corvettes with base engines used an 8" balancer. It was discontinued from SERVICE in May, 1972 and replaced by the GM #6272221. As far as I know, the GM #6272221 was also used in PRODUCTION for 72-82 Corvettes with L-48, LG-4, L-81, or L-83.

If one had a known GM #3947701 I'm very confident that it could be used to replace a GM #6272221 on any 72-82 Corvette originally using the 6272221.

10-4, and thanks. I just bought a NOS 3947701 off of Ebay. Cheaper than the aftermarket balancers.

A few years ago I read that someone rebuilds them. Does it work? who does it?

              Thanks!
