What is used to seal the gas tank cover to the body? I have replaced all the jnuts and will be installing new screws w/washers. Where can you get the sealer?

Strip caulking that can be bought at most auto parts stores. The caulking stays pliable and doesn't harden. The strips are about 3/16" in diameter (maybe less) and 12" in length, as I recall. Larry

      John,

The original sealer can be found at ACE Hardware. It is a white chauking and can be bought in rolls so you can use one continious piece. Use two rolled coils to circle cover. Yours, Steven J..............

My 62 Corvettes have all had black non-hardening strip caulk sealing the gas tank cover to the body section above the gas tank.
Available at body shops or automotive supply stores.

If it's an old-timer behind the counter, ask him for "dum dum."

3M used to make a black kind and a grey kind. I know 1 kind is still available. Not sure if it's black or the grey.

Usually can't see the caulk once the cover is installed.

I bought the grey ( I think that they still make both) and it's found near where they keep the caulk for windows, frames etc.

Mine was just like Bruce says, black non-hardening. Only one car to compare, though.
