    Is This Original Padding?

I am replacing the carpet on my '73. Does this look like the original padding? Should it be torn out and replaced?

    Thanks for the help,
    Chris

That padding looks like Landau/vinyl roof closed cell/water resitant foam padding. Most carpet sets you buy have the "jute" padding already glued to the carpet back. You might want to remove the padding from the car and check to see if there is a sound deadner/a tar paper type material, under the padding. I believe 73 had it. I,m sure one of the experts will chime in soon. Mike

I agree. That padding isn't original, there may still be the original underlayment below that.

Thanks Mike and Warren, I thought it looked strange, but I wasn't sure about '73. I think some newer carpet was pieced in with this padding. I'm pretty sure the seats were never taken out, they were a chore!

Perfect timing for this question...my 71 coupe has what looks like thin fiberglass insulation on the trans tunnel and the rest is yellowed foam like you show.
          What shoud it be..???
I heard jute padding under the foot wells.. how about the rest of the carpeted area's ???

Pete, You will likely get more answers to your situation if you post a new thread. This thread starts with 1973-77, and some folks with 1970-72 knowledge might not read it. Your post stating 1970-72 is buried in this thread.

              CHRIS-

My 74 convertible has the same 'Bubba" style padding in it, the only differance is it's yellow about 3/8" thick, cut with what I would believe to be scissors, all jagged edge cuts and the 2 sides don't EVEN come close to matching. I too am working on the rear interior area of my car. and will be looking for the proper carpet and backing for it.

                Marty,

That Bubba sure does get around! Let me know if you go with Al Knoch or someone else. Wilcox has some pretty good deals on the CF, but I'm not sure how authentic it is.

Did you find the same kind of "Tile Cement" to hold your padding to the body? We all laughed when we took mine apart! What was "BUBBA" thinkin?
