    091 coil

I have a 091 that does not work properly, car starts and pops etc. Upon removing the screw and coil wire catch there is no oil inside. The bottom of the can is bugged out a bit and I remember it got hot when I tried to use it.

Is this trash or can I add oil and try over again. What type of oil is used in these coils. Any help is appreciated, If I put my ohm meter across the primary terminals the the needle deflects to no resistance. If I put ohm meter terminals from primary + or - to secondary the needle does not move. Thanks for the suggestions, Tim

Correction, If I put ohm meter from secondary to primary + or - I have approx 9500 ohms.

The plates inside like a battery are gone , look for a new one.

      Re: 091 coil

      Tim,

I didn't just have AN original 091 on my 1960. I had THE original coil. I left the ignition on when the engine was not running to test wipers, radio, etc. and it burned up my original coil and an NOS ballast resistor because the points were closed. This was a costly lesson!

You will need another one just as Roy said. Be sure and get one with the 091 toward the bottom of the can. The repro has the 091 toward the TOP of the can. I know you will find this hard to believe, but it is true!

Interesting reply. In order to avoid the same plight do I simply disconnect the coil when working to test wipers, lights, etc....?

Re: 091 coil to Tim and Rick

            Tim,

You might want to take the wire off of the resistor also. Or just take the cap off and make sure the points aren't together. Might let the electrical experts chime in here, too.

Also for Rick, don't forget you need the later 091 with the stops at the bottom sides of the center post. I don't have a good pic, but the pic of the incorrect repro coil (incorrect because the 091 is at the top of the can) shows the top you need. The tabs beneath the terminals are square and hitting the stops on the center post keep them from turning. The coil Tim needs is shown in the other pic. For this coil, the tabs have a hook into a hole by the terminal to keep them from turning.

I know someone who has a loaner. Go on ebay gang. Nice 091 buy it now for only$400.00. It's been there for a very long time. But it's the early style 091. No 12-V(has 12V) and no "pads" next to the post.

                John,

"Only" $400?? I haven't priced one in several months, but I've never seen one for sale at over around $180. Unless they have gone up, I'm betting that that one will languish on eBay. However, there's always the Rick Aleshire with those deep pockets, so you can never tell!

                  Bob,

have been searching for some time to get a "correct" 091 for LADY - there were two different versions - JD knows this - and, the one he mentions is on eBabe - personally, have never seen it - so, don't know what search criteria he uses to see it - certainly not listed under 1963 Corvette, etc.

Re: 091 coil to Tim and Rick

Bob, I haven't seen a real deal 091 with the embossed info near the top. Ricky knows what to look for but I will tell you the days of the $180.00 091 are history for the most part. The 091 is getting very difficult to find. It took me years to locate one for my 63, the LWC. I used the 4th edition manual to my advantage as it said an 087 was OK for a 63 FI car. But I had heard that Carlton was planning on correcting the error in his new 5th edition so I had to hunt real hard on ebay to fine a nice NOS correct 091.(wasn't cheep) .
I was pulling RA's chain as that's why I'm here.

There is a Restorer article that contradicts the myth that all real 091 coils had the 091 embossment at the bottom. If anyone wants it I can dig it out. Originals without the shoulders also had the 091 embossment slightly above center. Sometime in 1962 the shoulders on the tower showed up on the pin holes for the early tabs disappeared. The 63 Z06 would have the 091 with the shoulders.

Thanks everyone for the info on the 091. Look at these pictures and let me know what I have. The tabs are there as well as the pin holes. Bottom is bugged out from overheat like Bob's.

By the way Bob, I feel your pain on the 091, I can't remember if mine was like that or if I did the same thing with the key in the on position. I gather a resistance check is not good to determine the health of these old coils??

Mine appears not to have oil and I was wondering what type of oil is used in these.
