Ceremetalix Shoes and Other RPO 684 - 687 Parts

My (limited - 4 - 687 cars) knowledge of RPO 687 has the excentric pins at all four corners, with the provided extended portion of the pin (4 flats as I recall.) to adjust with a wrench sticking out the inboard backing plate. With patience, they really work quite well. Best, Dennis

So to be an authentic Solid Axle Big Braker you need to be 100% eccentric. I'm in.

Could be--but it's healthy to start by being up front with your eccentricity.

Weren't the cerametalix shoes riveted? I would think that you would see the rivets no matter what state of wear the shoes were in.

I also know that the # of cerametilix pads on the shoes changed over the years (both leading and trailing shoes), but not sure what years had what # of pads on them. Does anybody know off hand?

See the attached photo of some very low mile Ceremetalix shoes.

The ceremetalix (brass in color) were spot welded from the bottom. these shoes were only used on RPO 684 cars, not the later RPO 687 cars. The later 687 shoes were sinteed-metallic (gray in color) and were riveted in 1960 and 1961 and then the 62's were bonded on. I am pretty confident that this info. is correct.

I thought in one of my books at home I had seen a photo of these shoes with 4 rivets in each segment (one in each corner). I will take a look and see where I went wrong.

Good to know and thanks for the info!!

The Ceremetalix segments were, in fact, welded on. The attached photo clearly shows the welds for one segment (looks like more than a spot weld to me) near the name Bendix on the back of the shoe.

Thanks for posting the pics of the NOS Cerametalix shoes. Very cool. Are the shoes stamped with Bendix on the inside??

Also, how thick are the pads?

                            Thanks,

                            Russ

                              The pads are .200 thick.

                                Thanks John. That's great info.

The story on my big brake setup was that the car was wrecked shortly after the big brake setup was added. The finned drums all measure right at 11 inches (a couple actually measure 10.995). And the Cerametallix pads measure about .20 as well. Thus, with the drums and pads basically unworn, the story of an early wreck must be accurate.

                                Thanks again,

                                Russ
