    ignition points

I need a part number and dxxx number for ignition points for a 62 340 horse.
I know the early points did not have the hex screw to adjust the points with the car running. Then the later ones came out so you could use a hex wrench to adjust.
I also remember the ones that had the condenser and points as one unit.
I'm seeing all kinds of different part numbers and the Dxxx code.
Can someone set us straight on thi sissue.
    Thank you
    Roger

1962 with 340 hp originally used a distributor with dual points. However, the point sets were the same as those used in single point distributors except that 2 point sets were used. The original points used in the distributor were Delco D106P, aka GM #1931988. These are points with CLIP-ON type wire leads. It's possible that points with a SCREW-TERMINAL were actually used in PRODUCTION, though. These would have been Delco #D106PS, aka GM #1966289.

The screw-type GM #1966289 was discontinued in March, 1982 and replaced by the clip-on GM #1931988.

The GM #1931988 was discontinued in September, 1992 and replaced by GM #12338659 which is also known by the Delco application-specific part number of D106P. These are still available through Delco or GM dealers.

I don't think that the Uniset type points (point and condenser set) will fit in a distributor designed for dual points. However, they are still available under GM #12338657, aka Delco D1007.

      Re: ignition points

Almost any point set you buy regardless of brand name on the box, including Delco, is made by Standard Motor Products. All the major replacement brands also have online catalogs where you can get a part number.

As stated, the '62 dual point system used the same basic point set as the single point system and had "dual windows" in the cap to allow for external dwell angle adjustment.

There is also a "heavy duty" point set that has 28-32 oz. breaker arm tension rather than the 19-23 oz. of the standard set. Delco used to offer these as D112P, but they are no longer cataloged. They were OE on some GM engines, but never on Corvette, even though Corvette mechanical lifter engines rev higher.

This set is sold as A112P under the BWD brand, but is available in other brands except Delco, and I recommend them for engines with redlines over 5500.

Delco, Standard, BWD, Echlin, Niehoff and others are all the same set built at the same SMP plant, so just buy whatever brand is most convenient or cheaper.

Delco no longer manufactures anything. They are just a marketing organization.

Does Mallory still offer points. I had a few of them and the quality was very good. The last time I was at the hot rod shop in town Mark (owner) suggested to use another after market hot rod type set of points. He didn't have the Mallory points. I did and they have been in my 65 for 9 years now and still performing good. They never break up. If any body is interested I get the brand name from him.

          Gene:

They are probably made by Accel. Excellent quality. Used them in hi-performance applications for MANY years. Equal or better than the old Delco-Remy D-112P. The Accel number for these is #110128. Condensor is #110108. Complete points and condensor set is #8104. These are 32 oz spring tension with RPM to 6500. They have the hex adjustment screw.

The Accel points are the ones that I recommend. They are the best ones available today. However, folks should keep in mind that when using the higher breaker tension point sets, wear on the distributor cam will be greater. I believe that's the total reason that they were not used "across-the-board" in the first place. However, I understand there are now reproduction distributor cams available although I've not seen them. The GM cams were discontinued about 18 years ago.

Roger, Go to NAPA and order 2 sets of CS786P ignition points. P mean perforated. I guess CS786 would be OK also.
Forget using the replacement Delco ones as they are known to crap out at about 3500 if you are lucky. John D.
