    54 tachometer calibration

Trying to recalibrate my 54 tach. It reads really low now. Any tips on how to do? Anyone know the ratio of the unit?

Give it up; at any speed above 50mph, the best one ever made MAY be 500 RPM in error.

Mine's far worse. At around 3,000 RPM, it reads about 1,200.

I disagree, they can be quite accurate if calibrated properly. This of course requires a magnetizer, demagnetizer, and speed comparator. The ratio of the tach is twice cable speed because it is driven by the distributor. The generator driven units are calibrated cable speed.

          Joe,

Do you have several thousand dollars of calibration equipment sitting in the corner of your garage? If you do, I would like to purchase it since you will only need it once in a lifetime.

SEND the tach to someone that has the expertise and give up the bucks!

You will NEVER be able to do it without the correct calibration equipment.

          JR

PS. Brian has the equipment to do the job correctly! Give it up!

              Joe,
I just had my gauges re-rfurb'd and I know the guy ended up using magnetizer, demagnetizer, and speed comparator to complete the speedo and tach in my situation, and I couldn't be happier..... I know he does all C1 - C3 gauges.....

Deluxe Speedometer in Denver is our local 'go-to' guy for speedo/tach work. He's an old timer, United Delco, dealer and has the Delco factory authorized calibration machine(s) to do this work. A typical fee is in the $50 range with parts being extra (double check current rate), but he does NOT do 'cosmetic' refurb work (fresh silk screen on the face, Etc.).
