    check engine lgts

The check engine light in my 96 LT4 came on when there was a what I thought a misfire. Had a OBDII code read and it was oxygen sensor code. The misfire only occured one more time. Kept driving the car a few more times and the check engine light went out. LT4 running fine. Decided to look for any condensation of water in the gas tank to prevent any rusting. No water observed, reinstalled filler neck to tank. No codes since, but try to keep tank full when not being used. My LT4 does spend a lot of inactive time in the garage.

My 96 Monte Carlo will give me a check engine light if I go pedal to the medal. OBDII code has MAF identified. Not anything replaced so far. Check engine light under normal driving will clear after 3-5 driving trips. Does not come on again unless the Monte is floored.

Wifes inherited 96 Lincoln Town car gave a check engine light. OBDII code reader identified bank 2 oxygen sensor. Car has 4 oxygen sensors, code reader identified after CAT sensor. I replaced it. Drove it thinking the computer would extinguish the check engine light like my LT4 and Monte. Thought the OBDII code reader was inadequate in identifing the right oxygen sensor and I would have to buy the pre-CAT oxygen sensor. Disconnected the negative battery cable last night. Connected it this morning started the Lincoln and no check engine light. Drove it several miles, still no check engine light. Wish I had disconnected the negative battery cable when replacing the oxygen sensor. Not all OBDII systems operate the same.
Now I wonder if the replaced oxygen sensor in the Lincoln was really bad and if the check engine light would of dissappeared if I had only disconnected the battery to see if it was a true failure of the oxygen sensor or just an isolated sensor reaction. Next time I will disconnect the negative battery cable to test the OBII system.
Counter person at Auto Zone told me that new Volkswagon cars will not start if the battery is disconnected and reconnected. Something has to be inserted into the cigarette lighter, special tool.

    Re: check engine lgts

a lot of times when cars are not driven much or hard the O2 sensor can be resurrected just by a light bead blasting.
