    My part of this story ended last year when I ground the old nut down 3/4 and welded a new on top of the remainder. One interesting point is all of yours seem to be 1/2-20, mine was 9/16-18. Try finding one of those at the local hardware store. I ended up buying a box of them from McMaster-Carr.

    If your pan had a 9/16-18 drain plug nut then I'd say "someone was in there before". I don't know of any Chevrolet Gen I or II small block or Mark I through Mark 6 big block that EVER used that size drain plug fitting from 1955 right through the present time. 1/2-20 has been standard all along.

    Gen III and IV small blocks as well as the 8.1L big block use metric drain plug size.
