    64 door lock installation

    All,

I am having trouble with reinstalling my door locks. Is there a top and bottom to the plate that holds the lock in place?

I am having trouble with the lock assembly coming loose after I shut the door a few times.

    Appreciate the help.

You might have the clip on upside down. It is like a spring and when installed correctly should hold pretty tightly. If it feels loose when youput it on, it's on wrong.

To elaborate some on what Tom is saying.....From what I experienced on several installations, if the backing spring goes on easy to mild you have it backwards. Flip it over, cuz I found it is a bear (cub) and needs to be persuaded with some umfff.

          Tom,
I know...I just wanted/needed to add a few comments, because the scrapes and cuss words are still fresh in my memory. *$&#@&*

It's what my pycho-analyist calls good stress relief.....Me and a friend who worked on these both came to the conclusion that GM took these and a few other gems as their first points of assembly and then built the cars around them.

The people who originally assembled them no doubt were laughing, thinking about the future, and folks like us and the girations and contortions we'd have to perform if we needed to fix/replace......

I'm kidding of course, no I'm not, yes I am, no I'm not, yes I am........

Funny how something as simple as that is so hard to descibe while typing. I hope he finds he had it in upside down and all is well now !!

              All:

I am sure I put the plate in backwards...... Went in easy and falls out with no real effort closing the door.

                Len -

The lock cylinder retainer is "bowed-up" when placed on a flat surface - you have to press down (hard) on that portion of the retainer to flatten it out as you push it into place so the sides of the opening go under the lugs on both sides of the lock cylinder and lock in place when the retainer is fully installed. Photo below of a typical installation.

                  John,

Sounds good. I know that I did not get the plate in correctly from your discussion. Appreciate the picture.
