Re: Generator Pulley Removal Help Needed
Justin,
You need a tool like this. Harbor Freight sells the kit for $10. It sure is cheaper than ruining the pulley.
You may also need a strap wrench to hold the pulley to be able to loosen the nut. If you have an impact wrench that will usually work, but only use it to take the nut off, putting it back on requires a lot less torque.
Good luck,

Re: Generator Pulley Removal Help Needed
Justin,
I have to issue a correction on my recommendation yesterday. I own the Harbor Freight puller kit. I tested it tonight and it WILL NOT work on the older style generator pulley. It is designed for more modern pulleys that have a protruding hub on which the puller attaches.
The good news is that modern alternators and power steering pumps rely much more on an interference fit for the pulley, mandating the tool to pull it off and put it on. Fortunately, the generator may not.
I reviewed an old Chevy repair manual as well as a DELCO repair manual. Not much specific instruction is provided other than, "remove the nut and washer then pull off the pulley and fan...". Note that the pulley has a keyway which also lends itself to relying on a less snug fit.
So perhaps you should just try loosening the nut to the end of the shaft threads. If you can't work the pulley off by hand, very gently tapping on the shaft end towards the generator (that's why the nut should be left near the end) with a soft mallet while applying pressure on the pulley just might "pop" it off.
Sorry if I caused an confusion.
