'used to give Top Value stamps at the Mobil station I worked at. The Marathon across the street gave S&H. I got my first living room furniture from the S&H store in Ft. Wayne, Indiana---a wicker couch, chair, green corduroy pads, two wicker end tables and two lamps with wicker shades. 'Too bad they didn't have Corvette parts!

My father used to fill up the 59 Chevy at Purple Martin in Chicago. Several Gas station attendents would approach the car check the oil, wash the windows, check the tires and fill the gas tank. I sat in the car mesmorized by the dinging sound of the gas pump. Then my dad would pay and receive Purple Martin stamps that were collected and pasted in the books to be turned in for gifts. Very cool. Gas was about .24 a gallon.

I remember the start of self service. I didn't like it in the beginning and I still don't. Far better when people talk and interact face to face.

Computers are an extension of that change.

Sitting on the front porch and visiting with friends and neighbors seems like so long ago.

That Martin station wouldn't happen to have been on Harlem Ave. just south of Grand Ave and the railroad tracks, would it? If so, that was my old neighborhood.

Another sign of the times is that all the grown adult males are wearing long pants. Women and children were wearing shorts but not the men and we are talking about the hot left coast.

We lived around augusta and california so the Purple Martin station was probably closer to that area. It may however been near Milwaukee or Grand ave. Can't remember.

We lived very close to Mr.Norms Grand Spaulding Dodge. Wow what a time for cars. Mr. Norm always had a great selection of modern day muscle cars on his lot and he had a Dyno machine so he attracted the local street racers.

Driving all the way out to Skips was a big deal for me at the time. I am back in the Chicago area now after being gone for about 35 years and I really enjoy the hot dogs and italian beef combo's, the people and the feel of Chicago.

Bob...I notice we are the same age. I went to Lane Tech, Chopin and Lafayette schools. Played in the 1969 Chicago prep bowl in Soldiers Field.

After going through the Catholic grade school system and one year at Quigley North, I ended up at Elmwood Park High; used to see Lane and the remnents of Riverview while on the bus to Cubs games.
How did you get involved with NCRS?
I learned of it while meeting both Tim Partidge and Carl Stohm at a local 'Vette show.

BTW -Mr. Norms building still exists. Skips is no longer, though there are shows / events using their name to draw cars and fans to see them.

I bought a 59 Corvette back in early 1976 and joined NCRS soon after. Not sure how I heard of it. Maybe from an event in St.Louis County where I was living. The 59 was white w/red interior and red inserts and was a real beauty. I bought it off a used car lot for $2750. Two top 3 speed, original motor. I had put custom wire wheels on it and someone must have tried to steel them and stopped. Driving on the highway at night the rear left tire and wheel came off and the car went into a spin. It was pretty hairy. The car was okay except for a chunk of fiberglass that chipped out in front of the rear left wheel as I recall.

I know Partridge.

I need to take a drive to the old neighborhood. I used to hang out at a Shell station on Chicago and Washtenaw. Lots of great cars came through there on their way to the Fulton street races. There was even a 69 ZL1 Camaro owned by a guy named JR.

A friend had a 67 RT that he would brake torque and dig holes into the blacktop.

Things were a lot simpler.

I love all the neon signs, the old clock, and the little car is advertising weight loss! nothing changes really. In SoCal along with S&H we had Blue Chip stamps I remember redeeming them at a warehouse in Glendale CA.
