My father used to fill up the 59 Chevy at Purple Martin in Chicago. Several Gas station attendents would approach the car check the oil, wash the windows, check the tires and fill the gas tank. I sat in the car mesmorized by the dinging sound of the gas pump. Then my dad would pay and receive Purple Martin stamps that were collected and pasted in the books to be turned in for gifts. Very cool. Gas was about .24 a gallon.
I remember the start of self service. I didn't like it in the beginning and I still don't. Far better when people talk and interact face to face.
Computers are an extension of that change.
Sitting on the front porch and visiting with friends and neighbors seems like so long ago.
