    1972 - Astro Ventilation glass

Recently I purchased both right and left door glass for my '72 coupe. The original glass had some serious scratches. The new glass looks great. The Astro Ventilation lettering is the correct size and the date coding and related information all compares very very favorably to the original. However, I do have some concern about the whiteness of the Astro Ventilation lettering; it appears to be not quite as white as the original lettering when viewed side by side. When viewed independently the difference is not discernible.

Did the color (Whiteness) of the Astra Ventilation lettering vary marginally from car to car as they came off the assembly line?

I have been told the vendor I purchased the glass from is highly recommended and their product has past judging with flying colors.

    Comments please.

If it's that good, please post the vendor's name.

Also, how does the LOF logo and date code look? I've seen some really bad ones...

Auto City Classic is the vendor. They are located in Minnesota. Have you heard of them? If so, do you have any feedback on their product?

Pat, what are your thoughts on the color variation?

Not sure if my first response went through. LOF and date code are great.

I've seen some repros appear slightly greener (?) or as you noted not quite as white. However, if the logo is finally correct for the Astro, and the other logos are good, I'd accept it. Note that some repros have the date code in a depression in the glass which is tough to see. You might want to double check that.

Did you compare the glass thickness?

The thickness has been a problem and I look forward to seeing what their glass looks like.

Lyle, what should the thickness measurement be?

I have AUTO CITY glass for my 71. I'm pleased how well it matched my original glass.
They were very fair to deal with, too. I ordered the glass in time for them to bring the glass to Carlisle to pick up. That saved $$$ shipping, plus I could check the glass carefully. When I looked at the windshield it had been dated TV rather than VT!!! They sent me another windshield without even mentioning the freight on a windshield crate which must come by truck not UPS or FED EX.
                  Regards,
                  Alan

PS: What are people using for a 'damming strip'?

I am at a loss. What is a "damming strip"? Is it a window seal?

                      Jerry,

I'd just use a calipers and compare them. I'm not looking for absolute numbers, just a comparison.

The original glass in my 73 convertible is .235 and I only checked one car as time ran out today.

The original glass in my '72 mic'd at .236" and the replacement glass mic'd at .233". 3 thousandth of an inch less thick then the original glass. Not bad.

Sorry, I did not get back sooner, but the car, glass and tools were at the shop.

The thickness of that new glass is great. The old repo's were easy to see it was too thin.
