1960 aluminum heads were never installed on a production Corvette. Were they ever sold over the counter? What does GIF stand for? Were these heads cast in Germany?

GIF = "Gray Iron Foundry", as far as I know.
I've heard claims of the heads being cast in Germany. I don't know. Mine has an Alcoa logo.

a lot of that performance stuff gets out early as i had a pair of open chamber BBC heads before they showed up on the ZL-1 cars. mine were sand cast as the outside shape around the exhaust ports was nothing like the ones sold later- Top

For heads that never went on production cars, there certainly are a lot of them "out there". So they must have been available at the parts counter if you knew to ask for them.
